How do I create a first-order discount with AI in Native?
To create a first-order discount in Native AI Suite, open the AI chat in Native Commerce and ask for it in plain words, for example: “Create a 10% discount for a customer’s first order.” Native AI Suite creates the promo code for you. Before you announce it, open the code to check the details and run two test checkouts: one that should get the discount and one that shouldn’t. Then tell customers exactly what the code does.
Why a first-order discount works
A welcome discount gives someone who has never bought from you a reason to try. It lowers the risk of a first purchase from a store they don’t know yet, and it gives you a simple message for ads, social posts and your homepage. The goal isn’t the discount itself but the second order: a customer who had a good first experience is more likely to come back at full price.
Step 1. Decide on the offer before you ask
A welcome discount works best when you’ve decided its terms first. Answer three questions:
How much can you afford? Look at your margin on a typical first order. A discount that wipes out the profit on every new customer only makes sense if you’re confident they’ll come back.
What does “first order” mean for you? A new customer account, or a new phone number? Decide this now so you know what to check later.
How long will it run? An ongoing welcome offer for every new customer, or a launch offer for a few weeks?
Percentage or fixed amount?
Percentage off (e.g. 10%) | Fixed amount off (e.g. 5 euros) | |
|---|---|---|
Works well when | Order values vary a lot | Most orders are a similar size |
Customers see | “10% off your first order” | “5 euros off your first order” |
Watch out for | Large first orders getting a large discount | Small orders where the discount takes most of the margin |
Write your answers down. You’ll check the result against them.
Step 2. Ask the AI chat in Native Commerce
In the Native Commerce AI chat, describe the discount the way you’d explain it to a colleague:
“Create a 10% discount for a customer’s first order.”
“Create a 5 euro discount for a customer’s first order.”
The numbers here are only examples; use the ones you decided on. Then open the promo code and check the amount and who it applies to.
Step 3. Test it twice
Run one checkout that should get the discount and one that shouldn’t, for example with an account that has already ordered. For each one, compare the discount and the final total with what you planned. Then open the order on your side and check how the code appears there, so your team can recognise it later.
Step 4. Show the offer where new customers will see it
A discount nobody notices doesn’t bring anyone in. Good places to mention it:
A banner on your homepage. You can ask the chat in Native AI Suite to add one, for example “Add a banner saying: 10% off your first order with code WELCOME10.”
Your social media and ads, where new customers first hear about you.
Your welcome message or first email to new subscribers, if you send one.
Step 5. Announce exactly what you tested
Every place you mention the offer should say what the code actually does: the amount, who it’s for and, if there is one, the end date. If you haven’t set an end date, don’t write “this week only”. Keep the wording the same everywhere, so customers don’t see one offer in an ad and another at checkout.
Step 6. See whether it worked
After a few weeks, look at the orders that used the code. How many new customers came in with it, and how many of them ordered again? If the code brings first orders but few repeat ones, try a smaller discount or a different offer and compare.
